Emma Watson Breaks Her Silence! The ‘Harry Potter’ Star Opens Up About J.K. Rowling, ‘Soul-Destroying’ Fame, and Why She Walked Away from Hollywood

Accio tissues! Emma Watson is back, and she’s pulling back the curtain on the “wizarding world” of fame in a way we’ve never seen before.

Sitting down for a surprise appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast on Wednesday, Sept. , the -year-old actress delivered her first major interview in years. While she’s been largely missing from the big screen since ’s Little Women, Watson proved she’s been doing a lot of soul-searching during her hiatus.

The actress, who became a global icon at just years old playing Hermione Granger, admitted that the transition from the “family” atmosphere of Harry Potter to the rest of Hollywood was a total shock to the system.

“Most people don’t come to those environments looking for friendships,” she revealed, getting emotional while describing the “rejection” she felt on other sets. “I think it was so unusual to make a set of films for years… we were a community. I came to work looking for friendship, and that was a very painful experience for me outside of Harry Potter. It broke me.”

Watson even confessed that the pressure of her public persona became “too heavy to carry,” describing the “Emma Watson” the world knows as an “avatar.” She recalled a hilariously awkward date where a guy told her, “Emma Watson makes me anxious.” Her response? “I agree! I can’t even be her.”

Of course, the conversation eventually turned to the elephant in the room: her relationship with Potter creator J.K. Rowling. While Rowling has faced intense criticism for her views on gender identity—and Watson has publicly stood in solidarity with the trans community—the actress revealed that her personal feelings are far more nuanced than a Twitter feud might suggest.

“I really don’t believe that by having had that experience and holding the love and support and views that I have, [it] means that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo,” Watson told Shetty. “I will never believe that one negates the other.”

Despite the “toxic” nature of the online debate, Watson says she refuses to “cancel” the woman who gave her the role of a lifetime. “There’s just no world in which I could ever cancel her out,” she said. “I can love her. I can know she loved me. I can be grateful to her… my job feels like to just hold all of it.”

As for her future in front of the camera, don’t count her out just yet. While she stepped back to heal from “painful stuff” in her personal life, she isn’t retiring.

“I’ll never say that I’ll quit acting,” she promised. “I’ll always be an actor. I’m still open to doing it again.”

Until then, she’s perfectly happy skipping the “insane” sensory overload of the red carpet. “Everything in your body says something’s wrong,” she said of the screaming fans and flashing lights. “You have to try to pretend as though this is all normal.”

Spoken like a true Gryffindor—brave, honest, and totally real.
