A Tale of Two Emmas! Emma Watson Joins Greta Gerwig’s ‘Little Women’ After Emma Stone Unexpectedly Exits

The March sisters have a brand-new face, and it’s a magical one!
In a casting “switcheroo” that has the internet buzzing, Emma Watson is officially heading to th-century New England. The Harry Potter alum has signed on to join director Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated adaptation of the Louisa May Alcott classic, Little Women.
The news, first reported by Variety, comes as a surprise to fans who were expecting another A-list Emma to lead the pack. Oscar winner Emma Stone was originally attached to the project, but she has reportedly had to drop out for unknown reasons.
Sony Pictures didn’t skip a beat, moving quickly to secure Watson to fill the void before cameras begin rolling next month. While it hasn’t been officially confirmed which sister Watson will be playing, industry insiders and IMDb previously had Stone linked to the role of the eldest sister, Meg March.
Social media is already divided—and delighted—by the news. “From Hermione Granger to Belle to Meg March? Emma Watson is collecting iconic literary characters like Infinity Stones,” one fan joked on X (formerly Twitter).
On TikTok, fans are already putting together “aesthetic” mood boards imagining Watson in period costumes alongside the rest of the film’s heavy-hitting cast.
And what a cast it is! Watson joins an absolute powerhouse lineup that includes Gerwig’s Lady Bird muse Saoirse Ronan, heartthrob Timothée Chalamet, and the legendary Meryl Streep. The call sheet also features Laura Dern, Sharp Objects breakout Eliza Scanlen, and Florence Pugh.
For Watson, this role marks another major step in her carefully curated post-Potter career. After the massive global success of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, the actress has been notoriously picky about her projects, often balancing her time on set with her high-profile activism and charity work.
The project is a major “level up” for director Greta Gerwig, too. Following the immense critical and awards-season success of her directorial debut Lady Bird, Gerwig is clearly “cashing in her chips” to bring this star-studded, classic tale to life.
As for Emma Stone, don’t worry about her schedule being too light. While fans are a bit “bummed” she won’t be collaborating with Gerwig this time around, she has plenty on her plate.
Stone is set to star in Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite later this year, and she’s already generating buzz for her role opposite Jonah Hill in the Netflix limited series Maniac. Plus, she’s gearing up to fight the undead in the long-awaited Zombieland next year.
With production on Little Women expected to start in just a few weeks under producers Amy Pascal, Denis Di Novi, and Robin Swicord, the countdown to the March sisters’ return is officially on.
