Daniel Radcliffe Reveals the ‘One of the Worst’ Movie Pitches He Ever Received with Emma Watson and Rupert Grint: ‘It Should Not Be Made’

Daniel Radcliffe has faced many dark wizards in his time, but nothing compares to a truly bad movie pitch.
The Harry Potter alum recently sat down for an episode of the hit YouTube series Hot Ones, and while tackling the “Wings of Death,” he dropped a bombshell about a potential project that almost reunited the Hogwarts trio in a very unexpected way.
According to Radcliffe, , a producer once tried to recruit him, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint for a modern remake of The Wizard of Oz.
The catch? It wasn’t exactly a faithful adaptation of the classic.
Radcliffe recalled that the pitch happened during the height of “Potter-mania” when he was just or years old.
“One of the worst ideas I’ve ever heard,” Radcliffe told host Sean Evans between spicy bites. “Somebody came to us and I think asked… they wanted to cast all three of us, me, Emma and Rupert, in a remake of Wizard of Oz.”
In this version of the story, Emma Watson was slated to play Dorothy. While Radcliffe couldn’t quite remember which role was earmarked for Rupert Grint, his own potential character was impossible to forget.
“I just remember that I was gonna be the lion, but also he knew karate,” the x Emmy nominee laughed. “I was like a karate-kicking Cowardly Lion.”
Even as a teenager, the actor knew the project was a recipe for disaster.
“I remember I was like or and I was like, ‘I don’t know a lot about the world, but this is a bad idea and it should not be made,'” he added.
Naturally, the internet has thoughts. Clips of the interview quickly went viral on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, with fans divided between relief that the film never happened and a morbid curiosity to see “Karate-Kicking Dan.”
“I would pay good money to see -year-old Daniel Radcliffe doing karate in a lion suit,” one fan joked on X. “But he was right to say no!”
Another user on TikTok commented, “This sounds like a fever dream. Can you imagine Emma Watson trying to keep a straight face while Daniel does roundhouse kicks?”
The Wizard of Oz has certainly seen its share of reboots and reimagining over the years. In , James Franco led Sam Raimi’s prequel Oz the Great and Powerful, which earned nearly $ million globally.
Of course, the land of Oz saw its biggest modern success with the recent Wicked films in and , which enchanted audiences to the tune of $. billion worldwide.
As for the “Golden Trio,” their onscreen collaborations remain strictly limited to the eight Harry Potter films released between and .
While they haven’t shared a scripted scene since The Deathly Hallows – Part , they did melt hearts worldwide when they reunited for the Harry Potter th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special on HBO Max in .
It seems fans will have to keep waiting for a proper reunion—and thankfully, it likely won’t involve any martial arts in the Emerald City.
