Emma Watson Breaks Her Silence on J.K. Rowling Rift: ‘I Hope I Can Keep Loving People’ Despite Major Disagreements

Emma Watson is proof that even in the Wizarding World, things aren’t always black and white.

The -year-old actress, who became a global household name playing the brilliant Hermione Granger, recently sat down for a vulnerable conversation on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast. During the episode, which has quickly set social media ablaze, Watson didn’t shy away from the elephant in the room: her strained relationship with Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling.

The rift between the two began back in , after Rowling shared views on the transgender community that many—including Watson and her co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint—found to be transphobic.

At the time, Watson made her stance clear on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned.”

During the podcast, Shetty asked Watson how she felt about Rowling’s subsequent comments that she would “never forgive” the stars for their opposition, and even claims that the actors now “ruined” the movies for the author.

Watson’s response was measured, emotional, and surprisingly full of grace.

“I really don’t believe that by having had that experience and holding the love and support and views that I have, mean that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with,” Watson told Shetty.

She explained that her advocacy for the trans community and her personal history with Rowling don’t have to cancel each other out. “I will never believe that one negates the other and that my experience of that person, I don’t get to keep and cherish,” she added.

The viral moment of the interview came when Watson shared her “deepest wish” for the future.

“I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with,” she said. When asked if she was still open to a dialogue with Rowling, Watson didn’t hesitate: “Yeah, and I always will. I believe in that completely.”

Fan reactions have poured in across TikTok and Instagram, with many praising Watson for her maturity. “This is exactly how you handle a difficult situation with grace,” one fan commented on a viral clip of the interview. Others, however, remain skeptical that the bridge can ever be fully rebuilt.

Beyond the Hogwarts drama, Watson also touched on her seven-year hiatus from the big screen. While fans miss seeing her on camera, the actress revealed she is “the happiest and healthiest” she’s ever been.

Watson admitted to Hollywood Authentic that while she misses the “art” of acting, the business side was a different story.

“The bigger component than the actual job itself is the promotion and selling of that piece of work,” she shared candidly. “I do not miss selling things. I found that to be quite soul-destroying.”

For now, Watson seems content focusing on her personal growth and her studies at Oxford, proving that whether she’s fighting for rights or finding herself, she’s doing it entirely on her own terms.
