Grab your robes and boarding passes for the Hogwarts Express, because the reunion of a lifetime is finally happening.
In news that has sent the internet into a total meltdown, HBO Max officially announced that Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint are reuniting for a massive retrospective special. Titled Harry Potter th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, the event will celebrate two decades since the boy who lived first hit the big screen.
The special is set to premiere on New Year’s Day—January , —making it the ultimate way for Potterheads to ring in the new year.
This marks the first time the iconic trio has appeared together in a televised setting since the final film premiered over a decade ago. Fans on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok are already sharing their favorite clips from The Sorcerer’s Stone, which premiered exactly years ago today.
According to HBO Max, the feature will tell an “enchanting making-of story” through all-new, in-depth interviews and personal conversations between the cast members. It’s essentially the ultimate backstage pass to the most successful film franchise in history.
“There’s magic in the air here with this incredible cast, as they all return home to the original sets of Hogwarts,” executive producer Casey Patterson said. “The excitement is palpable as they prepare to take their fans on a very special and personal journey.”
But it’s not just the big three making their way back to the Great Hall. The guest list is a “Who’s Who” of Wizarding World legends.
Fans can expect to see Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange), Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort), Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy), Gary Oldman (Sirius Black), and Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy).
Other favorites joining the tribute include James and Oliver Phelps, Bonnie Wright, Matthew Lewis, and Evanna Lynch. Even filmmaker Chris Columbus, who directed the first two films, will be there to reminisce.
One name notably absent from the live reunion list is author J.K. Rowling. While she has faced significant backlash recently for her controversial comments regarding the trans community, she isn’t being erased entirely. The special will reportedly include archival footage of the author discussing the series.
Tom Ascheim, President of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics, called the journey “magical to say the least.”
“This retrospective is a tribute to everyone whose lives were touched by this cultural phenomenon,” Ascheim said in a statement. He credited the “talented cast and crew” and the “passionate fans” for keeping the spirit of the Wizarding World alive for years.
If you can’t wait until January to get your magic fix, there’s more. An exclusive first look at the special will debut during the premiere of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses on November .
That four-part quiz competition, hosted by the legendary Helen Mirren, will feature its own celebrity cameos, including Pete Davidson and Jay Leno.
Whether you’re a Gryffindor or a proud Slytherin, one thing is for sure: New Year’s Day is about to be legendary. It’s time to head home to Hogwarts.
