Original ‘Harry Potter’ Director Chris Columbus Breaks Silence on HBO Reboot: Why He Thinks It’s a ‘Spectacular Idea’

The man who first brought Quidditch and Chocolate Frogs to the big screen is officially passing the wand.

Chris Columbus, the legendary director who helmed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is speaking out about HBO’s highly anticipated television reboot—and he’s giving it his magical seal of approval.

While some fans are still clutching their original DVD box sets, Columbus tells People that the move to a serialized format is actually a “spectacular idea.”

The Oscar-nominated filmmaker explains that even with nearly three-hour runtimes, the original movies faced a major Muggle problem: the clock.

“There’s a certain restriction when you’re making a film,” the Home Alone director admits.

He notes that while his productions tried to “get as much of the book in as possible,” there simply wasn’t a spell powerful enough to cram every chapter into a feature-length film.

“Our film was hours and minutes, and the second one was almost as long,” Columbus recalls, looking back at the and blockbusters that sparked a global phenomenon.

Now, with HBO and Max planning a “faithful adaptation” that will span a staggering consecutive years, Columbus is excited about the “breathing room” the new format provides.

“The fact that they have the leisure of [multiple] episodes for each book, I think that’s fantastic,” he says.

For the director, the real magic lies in the “discarded plotlines” that never made the theatrical cut.

“You can get all the stuff in the series that we didn’t have an opportunity to do… all these great scenes that we just couldn’t put in the films,” he explains.

The ambitious project, spearheaded by showrunner Francesca Gardiner, aims to dive deep into J.K. Rowling’s original novels, exploring the uncharted hallways of Hogwarts that fans have been dreaming of since the final credits rolled in .

While the project has sparked plenty of online buzz and debate among “Potterheads” on X and TikTok, the excitement for a new generation of wizards is undeniably high.

In fact, the hunt for the next Harry, Ron, and Hermione has already become one of the biggest casting calls in history.

A jaw-dropping , children have reportedly auditioned for the iconic roles originally made famous by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.

As principal photography prepares to kick off this summer, Columbus is ready to sit back, grab some popcorn, and watch the magic unfold from the sidelines.

“I look forward to seeing what they’re trying to do with it,” he concludes. “I think it’s great.”

It seems that after decades of being the one behind the camera, the man who started it all is finally ready to experience Hogwarts as a fan.
