The ‘Wizarding World’ Just Got Bigger! HBO Max Chief Calls Upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ Series the ‘Streaming Event of the Decade’

The Boy Who Lived is about to become the boy who broke the internet.

Warner Bros. Discovery is putting its full magical weight behind the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, and the expectations are, quite literally, record-breaking. During a high-profile event in London, J.B. Perrette, CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games at WBD, didn’t hold back his excitement for the reboot.

Perrette told the crowd that the series will be “the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period.” It’s a bold claim in an era of massive hits, but the “Potterhead” community on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok is already buzzing with anticipation.

The announcement coincided with the reveal of the HBO Max launch date in the UK and Ireland, set for March . For fans across the pond, this marks the final piece of the puzzle for the service’s European rollout—and they’re getting a front-row seat to the magic.

While the original films made household names out of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, a new generation is ready for their turn in the Great Hall. Child actor Dominic McLaughlin has officially snagged the role of Harry Potter, joined by Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.

But don’t expect a shot-for-shot remake of the movies. Perrette teased that the multi-season drama will offer a “meticulousness” that the big screen simply couldn’t fit into a two-hour runtime.

“Producer David Heyman will tell you the scope of the production, the detail, the meticulousness of what they are going through and what they are building,” Perrette explained. “It takes theatrical to a whole different level.”

He even poked a little fun at the internal hype, adding, “Casey [Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO] doesn’t like me saying this, but I really think this is the streaming event of the decade.”

Fan reactions have been pouring in across social media. On TikTok, the “Wizarding World” tag is flooded with theories on which book chapters—like S.P.E.W. or Peeves the Poltergeist—will finally get their moment in the spotlight. “If we don’t get the full Quidditch World Cup this time, I’m rioting,” joked one viral post on X.

The cast is also shaping up to be a powerhouse of talent. Alongside the young trio, industry heavyweights like John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, and Nick Frost are set to take on significant roles, adding some serious acting muscle to the production.

Produced by Warner Bros. Television, HBO Entertainment, Brontë Film & TV, and Heyday Films, the series is currently eyeing a massive debut. For Perrette and the team at WBD, the series isn’t just another show—it’s “number one, two, and three in many ways.”

With the original film franchise grossing billions and defining a generation, the pressure is on. But if Perrette’s confidence is any indication, we’re all about to be spellbound once again.
