Why Emma Watson Said ‘No’ to Cinderella: The Empowering Reason She Chose Belle Instead

Emma Watson is officially our favorite real-life Disney princess, but she almost wore a very different glass slipper!
The Harry Potter alum is currently breaking the internet after revealing that she actually turned down the lead role in Disney’s live-action Cinderella—a part that eventually went to Lily James. While fans on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok are reeling from the news, Emma’s reasoning is pure “Hermione Granger” energy.
In a recent candid interview with Total Film, the actress and U.N. Goodwill Ambassador explained that the clock didn’t strike midnight on her career; she simply didn’t feel the character was the right fit for the message she wants to send to young women.
“I didn’t know they were going to make Beauty and the Beast at the time I turned down Cinderella,” Emma shared. “But when they offered me Belle, I just felt the character resonated with me so much more than Cinderella did.”
For Emma, it all came down to the values Belle represents. Known for her work with the “HeForShe” campaign and her advocacy for gender equality, Watson was looking for a character that felt like a modern-day hero.
“She remains curious, compassionate, and open-minded,” Emma noted. “And that’s the kind of woman I would want to embody as a role model, given the choice.”
Fans are praising the star for staying true to her convictions. After all, Emma has been a voice for women across the globe since her days at Hogwarts, and she’s not about to stop now.
But wait, there’s more! Emma didn’t just accept the role of Belle—she completely reimagined her. To ensure Belle wasn’t just “sitting idle all day,” Emma collaborated with director Bill Condon to give the character a brand-new backstory.
In this version, Belle is an inventor! While her father, Maurice, focuses on music boxes, Belle is the one getting her hands dirty. It’s a small change, but a significant one that highlights her work ethic and intelligence.
“There’s this kind of outsider quality that Belle had,” Emma explained, noting her love for the animated classic. “She challenges the status quo of the place she lives in, and I found that really inspiring.”
The actress added that she admires how Belle is “not easily swayed by other people’s perspective—not swayed by fear-mongering or scapegoating.”
Choosing Belle was a major gamble for Emma, who even had to turn down the lead role in La La Land (which later won Emma Stone an Oscar!) due to filming conflicts. However, her passion for the “tale as old as time” clearly won out.
From her education-first hiatus after Harry Potter to her powerhouse roles in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Emma has always marched to the beat of her own drum. Now, she’s proving that being a princess is about way more than a ballgown—it’s about having a voice.
We can’t wait to see Emma bring her “empowering defiance” to the big screen. One thing is for sure: Belle has never looked so inspiring!
